Reconstruction “Phoenix” Project
 The
Pentagon as it stands today.
Our first involvement in the project began immediately after
the Federal Bureau of Investigation concluded its investigation
of the site. Engineers conducted field investigations
of existing conditions in the area of the Pentagon destroyed
as a result of the September 11 attack. Subsequent to review
of the documentation of the original design, the team developed
preliminary drawings and specifications to rebuild core and shell
systems to the condition of September 10.
The second phase of this effort started in January of 2002, under
a separate contract with KCE Structural Engineering (the project
management company for the Phoenix Project). Daily, extensive
field coordination with contractors and sub-contractors was conducted
to interactively improve the design and constructability. Syska
performed engineering design services and provided construction
administration services for the HVAC, electrical, security and
telecommunications infrastructure. This involved the development
of comprehensive contract documents including significant upgrades
to the pre-September 11 design which allowed improved flexibility,
redundancy, and defensibility.
The final phase was the implementation of fire and life-safety “lessons
learned” into the tenant fit-out plan. The continuously changing
requirements from the Department of Defense required continuous
interactivity between all members of the Pentagon Phoenix Reconstruction
Team.

Memorial Park
Rendering of the future memorial at the Pentagon.
Syska Hennessy Group is part of a design-build team led by the
joint venture of Centex Construction Company and Lee Associates,
Landscape Architects. The design of the Pentagon Memorial was
selected from many national entrants and is located on a three acre
site on the Pentagon reservation just north of the South façade
of the building where the airplane impacted the building. The
design consists of a memorial bench for each life lost either in
the Pentagon building or in the airplane; each memorial bench is
aligned with the flight path of the plane. Each memorial bench
is cantilevered with a lighted water pool directly beneath the cantilevered
seating area. Between benches and rows of benches trees will
be planted and lights in the pools will reflect upon the
memorial bench.
